God’s Holy Fire: ‘What You Should Say’
Saturday, October 31, 2020
[Jesus said,] “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. … When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
In these verses, Jesus gives us two incredible promises. First, he assures us that if we publicly confess our allegiance to Him, then he will claim us as his own before the Father and the angels in heaven (Matthew 10:32). Then, he goes a step beyond the first promise: He tells us that we aren’t to worry even about what to say in difficult situations because the Holy Spirit will give us the words to say! No wonder the Holy Spirit is described as God’s seal of ownership and our guarantee of salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14).
O Father, fill me with your Holy Spirit and guide me by your Spirit to say the things I need to say to honor Jesus with courage, conviction, love, and effectiveness. Holy Spirit, I thank you for your presence and help. In Jesus’ name, I offer my thanks. Amen.
Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 10:31
Saturday, October 31, 2020
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Thoughts on Today’s Verse…
As humans, we are often quick to quibble over things we feel are important to us when others don’t share our enthusiasm — especially food, holidays, and special events. This problem is often more a sign of insecurity than it is a mark of sincerity. We are to do what we do based on our commitment to honor the Lord, not because others do it or approve of it. At the same time, we want to be careful about judging others for what they do or do not celebrate, eat, or drink. The bottom line when judging such things: Can we do it to honor the Lord?
Holy and Righteous Father, forgive my foolishness and silliness. I find myself getting so worked up over meaningless things and forgetting to keep my focus on the matters and people that are important to you. May all I do today, and every day, be done as a conscious decision to honor you and bring you respect. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
