Jesus’ Death & Resurrection

from Joseph Tkach GCI President

Near the end of his Gospel, the apostle John says his purpose in writing was that “you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). The focus of the Gospels is to tell the good news about Jesus and the salvation that is ours in him.

Though in verse 31 John attributes salvation (life) to the name of Jesus, it’s common for Christians to speak of being saved by Jesus’death. Though this short-hand statement is correct as far as it goes, relating salvation exclusively to Jesus’ death can stunt our understanding of the fullness of who Jesus is and all he has done to save us. The events of Holy Week remind us that Jesus’ death, though vital, is part of a larger story that includes our Lord’s incarnation, death, resurrection and ascension. All these are intrinsic, inseparable milestones of Jesus’ one redemptive work—the work that gives us life in his name. During Holy Week, and throughout the year, let’s look to Jesus—the complete salvation package.

On Easter Sunday, we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, which fulfills many Old Testament prophecies. The author of Hebrews tells us that Isaac being saved from death is a picture of resurrection (Hebrews 11:18-19). The book of Jonah tells us that Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster “three days and three nights” (Jonah 1:17). Jesus related that event to his death, burial and resurrection (Matthew 12:39-40; Matthew 16:4, 21; John 2:18-22).

We celebrate Jesus’ resurrection with great joy because it reminds us that death is not permanent. It’s a temporary step toward our future—eternal life in communion with God.

At Easter we celebrate Jesus’ victory over death and the new life we will have in him. We look forward to the time spoken of in Revelation 21:4: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” The resurrection is the hope of our salvation.

Nepal Mission Donation Needed

NEED: Funds needed to help Deben Sam – our GCI affiliate in Nepal.  We have helped in the past, and we have currently been praying for the situation there.

My dear friends, Rod & Ruth Matthews – mission developers for GCI in that area – were just in Nepal – and I inquired about mission needs in Nepal.

Here’s what Ruth Matthews wrote me:

“Hi David….Sunday morning here and Rod and Danny Zachariah from India will be doing lectures at Himalayan Bible School.  The school shares the building that the church meets in – near Nepal’s capital of Katmandu.           Due to new elevated road construction next to the church, Deben tried to find another building…but nothing was available.  So all the funds raised at this time (originally to aid in the move) will go to Himalayan Bible School to help with the flood mitigation project of the building, which is also used for church, before the rainy season starts here. Deben could not find a suitable place to move to so has had to renew the lease on the property — but since the paved road with no drainage provisions, has gone in at 18+ inches above their property level he will have to do a lot of work so the building is not a swimming pool during the wet season….any excess funds will be added to the same purpose as it will surely cost more than the $1000    to do the work needed. Many thanks in advance for asking if you and your 3 churches could help.  The need is great.”

Our 3 small churches have been able to save money and this is a mission we have supported in past and now are blessed to help them again. Each of the 3 churches will be determining an amount to send, and letting me know.

What a Profound, Exciting, Joyous, Glorious & Wonderful time of the Christian Year, celebrating Easter 2018 ~ The Resurrection of Our Lord

There is only ONE REASON we celebrate Easter, and that is to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! How blessed we are to celebrate this event.

In Titus 3:5-7, we are reminded of the great love of our Triune God: “God saved us, not because we have worked hard enough or done enough good deeds, but because of His love and mercy.”

In an article by Tammy Tkach Remember Him With Joy,        a portion of that article that spoke to me:

“Let’s remember Jesus (Luke 22:19) as the son of God who came to earth to live among us and to be one of us. He’s the One who gave us, in the form of his person, freedom from the law, the chains of sin and the oppression of death. He gave us freedom from fear of the future, freedom to know the Father and freedom to be called children of God.

Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before him. It’s hard to imagine joy so great. It certainly was not human or earthly joy. It had to be the joy of being God! The joy of heaven! The joy of eternity! It’s joy we can’t begin to imagine or describe!

This is the One we remember—the One who changed our grief into joy and who invites us to share his life, now and in eternity. Let’s remember him with smiles on our faces, a shout of joy on our lips and with light hearts filled with the delight of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord!”

On Easter, the Cross is empty, the tomb is empty, and Jesus is Alive. What immense love that my God had for me. I am forgiven & innocent, loved and valued by my God.

Let’s show and tell others about the Gracious Gift of Jesus’ Life & Love that we have been freely given.  It will never, ever end.

Rejoicing That Jesus Is Alive & Loves Us  – Pastor David
