True Freedom

Excerpts from article by GCI President Joseph Tkach

God in his freedom is never compulsive, erratic, unfaithful, or tyrannical. Instead he is always faithful to who he is as the Triune God of love. We should therefore not imagine that our human freedom (which is contingent upon God’s freedom), is about acting on our whims, impulses, and arbitrary or disordered desires, unaccountable to anyone or anything. True human freedom depends on knowing God and his sovereign freedom, which makes it possible for his grace to be unconditional, unforced, and thus given freely to the undeserving like you and me.

   Freely given, freely received

God has solely determined and established the blessing of his grace upon us in order for us to experience true freedom. Further, while his freedom is not dependent on anything (our response or behavior included), we experience that freedom when or as we respond to Christ in repentance with faith, hope and love. Our freedom is a gift freely given and so to be freely received as we are moved and set free by the Holy Spirit who ministers on the basis of the completed work of Jesus Christ. Thus we experience freedom because Jesus, by his Word and Spirit, has set us free (John 8:36)—first in relationship to him, and then to live out that freedom in community with other people.

As we respond to Christ, we find increasing freedom to live untethered by the whims of this world’s ever-changing culture with its capricious demands and arbitrary conditions. In freedom, we live in joyful proclamation that the reign (kingdom) of God currently exists, all the while expectantly awaiting its coming fullness. As we participate here and now in what God is doing, we are sent into the world to make a difference, helping others know and experience the true human freedom that is found in relationship to God as Lord and Savior.

Living in the wonderful freedom given us by God our creator, reconciler and redeemer,

Joseph Tkach

Today is our Celebration Sunday.  A day we set aside to review, in pictures and words, how we have been blessed and privileged to join Jesus in His Ministry of LIFE & LOVE to those within our church, outside our Church in the community, Nationally and Internationally. It continually amazes me the avenues and opportunities that our Lord gives us to share His love with others. Keep up your prayers that 2017 can be another great year of service for our Lord & His children, especially as we move our church into the Irvington community – serving them by sharing the Life & Love of Jesus.

As we embark on our journey of 2017, I want to thank you for your faithful tithes and offerings in 2016. As we seek the Lord’s leading in how He wants to continue using our church in 2017 and beyond, it is going to be important that we all remain faithful in giving to HIM.  Being faithful in WORSHIPPING THE LORD through appropriate giving is a spiritual discipline we all should love to do.  Our Lord has, is and will give us everything we need for this life & life Forever!!!

What an honor and privilege to be able to worship Him through giving of our time, talents and treasures. Appropriate Giving Glorifies God and shows how much we really love Him. Our lives are to be lived out in the Spirit as a Grateful Response to the faithfulness of God to us. Our generous giving also helps fund the ministries of our (Jesus’) church.

I know that so many of us watched the presidential inauguration this past week.  Jonnie and I were moved by the prayers during the inauguration and in the events the following day. We love our country, and as we prayed for President Obama, and now for President Trump – we do so with the encouragement of scripture: I Tim. 2:1-4 “I urge that supplications and prayers…be made for kings and all who are in high governmental positions… Why?  Timothy continues …that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Let’s move forward in prayer, with Jesus leading, guiding, providing and protecting us in 2017.  Let’s be grateful, joyful and excited to live in and by His Grace for another year! You Are Loved & appreciated !  – Pastor David
